How to Get the Usage Limit and Token bar in Claude Code

Managing token limits and monitoring context windows is crucial when building projects with Claude Code. Fortunately, you don’t need to install unverified third-party GitHub repositories, browser extensions, or risky plugins to track your usage.

Claude Code includes built-in native commands that display your real-time session limits, model breakdowns, and context window consumption—entirely safely and natively.

Here is how to monitor your usage and stats step-by-step.

Step 1: Check Context Window Usage

To see a color-graded breakdown of your current conversation’s token consumption:

1. Launch a Claude Code terminal session.
2. Type /context and hit Enter.

Step 2: View Session Usage & Reset Times

To view your current token bar and upcoming rate-limit reset times:

1. In your active session, type /usage .
2. Press Enter.

• Weekly Session Limits: Overall consumption across all models.
• Reset Timers: Exact time remaining until your limits refresh.

Step 3: Inspect All-Time Stats & Model Breakdown

Inside the /usage view, you can use your cursor or arrow keys to navigate across three main tabs:

1. Overview Tab

Shows high-level metrics including total active days, total tokens consumed across all sessions, longest session duration, and your usage streaks.

2. Stats Tab

Provides granular data on API activity, breaking down:

• Input Tokens vs. Output Tokens
• Cache Reads vs. Cache Writes

3. Models Tab

Double-click or switch to the Models tab to see a complete breakdown of consumption by specific AI model (e.g., comparing Claude Sonnet usage against Claude Opus).
